A proverb is a simple and concrete saying popular known and repeated, which expresess a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. They are often metaphorical. A proverb that describes a basic rule of conduct may also be know as a maxim.
Examples:
- Eat,drink and be merry (for tomorrow we die).
- A dog is a man's best friend
- Don't poke the bear
- We'll just have to make do.
Proverbs are used in conversation by adultss more than children, partially because adults have learned more proverbs than children. Also, using proverbs well is a skill that is developed over years.
Proverbs, film and music:
In film, the proverbs best known example of rich proverb use is Forrest Grump, known for both using and creating proverbs.
In music, proverbs are often poetic in and of themselves, making them ideally suited for adapting into songs. Proverbs have been used in music from opera to country to hip-hop. A example of this is "Spilt Milk" album by Jellyfish:
